MALE MAINTENANCE: GADGETS - Apple tablet in 2010

Confirmed: Apple Tablet In 2010

Posted by: Peter Burrows on May 21

A source familiar with Apple’s product plans says that the company plans to introduce a tablet-based device in early 2010. This is consistent with the report from Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster this morning suggesting precisely the same thing. Here’s the body of Munster’s note:

Signs Pointing To A New Mobile Device. Between indications from our component contacts in Asia, recent patents (see here) relating to multi-touch sensitivity for more complex computing devices, comments from Tim Cook on the April 22nd conference call, and Apple’s acquisition of P.A. Semi along with other recent chip-related hires, it is increasingly clear that Apple is investing more in its mobile computing franchise.

Specifically, we expect this to result in a larger (7”-10”) touchscreen tablet that will launch in 1H CY10. Additionally, Apple’s consistent message that it refuses to launch a “cheap” portable netbook, and its desire to differentiate itself in a maturing market before it’s too late (similar to the timing of iPod and iPhone), plus its gradual addition of multi-touch technology to all of its core products (iPhones, iPods and Macs) leads us to conclude this product will be a touchscreen tablet (not a netbook).

No Netbook On The Horizon; Tablet A CY10 Event. We expect Apple to fill the gap between the iPod touch and the MacBook with a new tablet device (not a netbook) priced at about $500-$700. Apple will likely leverage its multi-touch patents to differentiate its product from the typical netbook. We are anticipating a new category of Apple products with an operating system more robust than the iPhone’s but optimized for multi-touch, unlike Mac OS X. The device’s OS could bear a close resemblance to Apple’s mobile OS and run App Store apps, or it could be a modified version of Mac OS X. We expect the development of such an OS to be underway currently, but its complexity, along with our conversations with a key company in the mobile space, leads us to believe it will not launch until CY10.

Apple’s Timing In Entering New Markets. Apple launched the first iPod in Oct-01, three years after the first portable MP3 player was on the market. Likewise, the iPhone debuted in Jun-07, five years after the first BlackBerry with email and mobile phone capabilities. With both products, Apple designed devices that were differentiated enough to gain significant market share despite its later entrance into the markets. We believe Apple is observing the netbook market in a similar way, and will eventually enter with a tablet, a premium mobile computing device.

Munster’s analysis sounds extremely convincing to me. Despite rumors of an impending launch of lower-end mid-sized devices, Apple is still doing well enough in its businesses—both in terms of market share, and certainly from a margin point of view—that it is likely loath to simply give in to the pressure to throw some cheap netbook knock-off out on the market. If current economics conditions are anywhere near as bad as they are going to get, it seems Apple is powering through just fine. Why take the risk of cannibalizing more profitable product lines in the future, with a product that Steve & Co. wouldn’t be “proud of,” as they say whenever asked about netbooks by Wall Street analysts.

But taking the time to craft yet another consumer category-making product makes total sense. Until now, all the talk of mid-sized devices that are smaller than a laptop and larger than a cellphone strike me as wishful thinking by vendors. But who really needs one, and for what? I know I don’t. But if Apple comes out with a slick multi-touch-equipped device of that size, able to run thousands of Apps tuned for the form factor (not to mention play movies, or help you create your own), that’s a different story. And probably a very profitable one.

2010 Aries Forecast

Brace yourself for Radical change:

Hold on to your hat, Aries! This is a whirlwind year and very possibly the one you've been anticipating for a long time. Your pioneering personality sparkles with enthusiasm when presented with new experiences -- and fortunately, the most significant planetary patterns of 2010 have excitement written all over them.

Worldly Jupiter and unpredictable Uranus enter your sign and can turn your life upside down in shocking ways. Jupiter's every-twelve-year return to your sign marks the beginning of a new opportunity cycle, so make sure to aim yourself consciously in a direction you want to travel. You'll feel the expansive effect of this giant planet from June 6 to September 9 and then again from January 22, 2011 to June 4, 2011. Doors that were formerly closed will now open with ease, inviting you to embark on a journey of a lifetime.

The ride of your life:

Uranus takes eighty-four years to orbit the zodiac, so its last visit to rambunctious Aries was from 1927 to 1934. No part of your world will be left untouched as Uranus moves through your sign from 2010 until 2018, releasing buried tensions and freeing you from the obstacles that kept you from fulfilling your dreams. This planet's erratic energy could offer you the ride of your life. Yet there's more going on here than just a wild and crazy time. Comfortable routines are radically disturbed as lightning crackles and brightens up your life. You are jolted awake from your cozy sleep and, hard as you may try, cannot return to your old way of life.

You receive a double whammy from giant planets Jupiter and Uranus announcing their joint presence in impulsive Aries within a few days of each other -- Uranus on May 27 and Jupiter on June 6. The impetus for a sudden, positive shift of direction will be the strongest when they conjoin on June 8, September 18 and again on January 4, 2011.

Entering new territory:

The ongoing theme of radical change is further emphasized by the continuing opposition of restrictive Saturn to revolutionary Uranus that began in late 2008. This powerful aspect is exact on April 26, forcing you to once again confront the negative habits that prevent you from engaging your world without excess emotional or material baggage. If you can push up against the resistance with integrity, a sudden breakthrough should increase your stability rather than simply ushering in chaos and stress. The opposition is exact again on July 26, just a few days after Saturn reenters reflective Libra.

These Saturn-Uranus oppositions created an underlying instability throughout 2009, but this final occurrence is in different houses from the previous ones, falling across your relationship axis of the 1st House of Self and the 7th House of Others. This turns last year's inner adjustments into visible changes. Recent decisions will require a final confirmation as you step boldly into a new way of expressing yourself at work and in love. You have prepared and waited long enough, Aries. It's time to shift gears and move confidently into the new territory that until this moment has remained just beyond your horizon.

The Tiger in 2010

The Tiger

Magnetic, passionate and grand! When the Tiger does anything, it’s noticed! Indecisiveness and stubbornness can mar the sparkle of the Tiger personality. On the one hand generous, on the other hand a little mean, it’s sometimes hard to know where one stands with the Tiger. Flexible, honest and truly entertaining, one has a friend for life with a Tiger.

Forecast for 2010
Being the Tiger’s own year, 2010 holds great promise for those born under this sign, with exciting developments happening for them both personally and professionally. Some Tigers may be feeling disappointed and disheartened after 2009 and it will be important to leave the past behind and concentrate on the future, which is looking so bright! Financially, everything improves this year for those born under this sign and money-making thoughts and ideas should be fully explored and investigated. With the fast pace of this year for all signs, the Tiger needs to take extra care in planning and thinking all projects through – no rushing headlong into schemes during 2010! August, December and January will see a very active and entertaining social calendar, but all of 2010 will see fun activities for the Tiger. The Spring months, March to May, will bring encouraging and interesting job opportunities, but the Tiger will still have to make sure he puts himself forward and gets noticed at work.

Interesting Tiger Facts:

Special Flower: Violet

Hello Australia!!!

I got my visa last December 23... making it one of the best Christmas gifts I received in 2009.

I am leaving 17 days from now. I wish I could still buy more time to prepare for the trip as I still have about 5 events to take care of before the 17th.

Personality of the Month (DECEMBER): BRENT CHUA

First of all, I would to apologize for my 2-month hiatus in blogsphere... I've been busy with lots of project.

A. Timeline of your modeling career.

I do not like to focus on the past nor future too much. I try to embrace every single day for life is unpredictable and nothing lasts forever.

B. Fashion Icons. Why?

I do not have any fashion icons per say. I believe it is essential for everybody to have their own distinct style. As an individual, especially in New York, personal style is extremely important. Amongst so many people, you feel particularly inclined to portray your character by means of what you wear. Also, it can be exciting and a great way to illustrate one's singularity.

C. Songs that define Brent Chua

'Heroes' David Bowie
Nervous Breakdown' Black Flag
'Chinaberry Tree' Mew
'When I Grow Up' Fever Ray
'True Love Way' Kings of Leon

D. Fashion Moments

I cannot pick and choose specific moments in which were memorable for I consider every opportunity to be interesting.

E. Things you want people to know about you.

I live in Alphabet City of New York.
My best friends are also models named Berto You Lee and Taylor Edward.
I used to skateboard.
Sometimes I get things for free.
One day I would like to open a modeling agency.

F. Upcoming Projects

Option for DKNY
H&M Advertisement
Tigi Bedhead
Uniqlo

G. Message to your Fans

I would like to extend my utmost respect to those of you who continue to believe in me throughout my career. Thank you always.

H. Message to Filipino models

Despite the difficulties making it in the industry, always be the best you can be and never forget those who have always stood by you.

Thanks Brent for the time and for sending photos.

MALE MAINTENANCE: GROOMING - D&G Anthology

The D&G Fragrance Anthology perfumes are built around the concept of tarot cards. Each is named for a card and tries to capture the character of the card.

6 L’Amoureux

Spices & musk: bergamot, juniper, pink pepper, birch leaf, cardamom and orris heart, with a wood and musk base.

3 L’Imperatrice

Exotic fruit & florals: watermelon, kiwi, pink cyclamen.

1 Le Bateleur

Contradictions: aquatic, cedar wood and vetyver.

18 La Lune

White florals and leather: lily, tuberose, sandalwood, musk, orris, white leather.

10 La Roue de la Fortune

Feminine florals and woodsy roots: tuberose, gardenia, jasmine, benzoin, patchouli.

Although the reviews are not that good...

It is not an upscale line but something like the Marc Jacobs splashes or the new concept of cheaper perfumes & cosmetics promoted by L'Oréal to fight the recession (see the new Victor & Rolf - the entry level concept). The bottles look like a magnified version of the small Prada boutique perfumes while the colors are very Marc Jacobs - the overall concept, though using very expensive models is closer to the Zara line. It seems that the D&G team had not enough money for fine fragrances and send their brief to the personal care division. With one exception they all smell like shampoos or body sprays and are not real perfumes. Every creation has a little something, a nice idea but this is diluted at 1% in that fresh transparent base that is everywhere, a base that originated late 80's and was the base of shampoos and body lotions. Almost all (except 10 and 3) have very poor tenacity and even less tenacity on skin. Also the diffusion power is very weak unless you put a lot of fragrance on you.

If you smell Chanel Exclusives and then The D&G Fragrance Anthology you can really see the difference between luxury and mass perfumery, between the richness of fabrics, the details and the craftsmanship of a Haute Couture house and the affordable solutions available to D&G. But we should not be surprised about the shampoo quality of D&G Fragrance Anthology. After all, they are made by Procter and Gamble and they now little about prestige perfumes (see how they have burried Jean Patou).

THE SCENE: Manny Villar SHAME ON YOU Part 2

One Villar supporter reacted to the styro photo I published a few weeks ago:

Gusto ko lang pong magkumento at sana mapakinggan po. In campaigns, maraming volunteers na sumasali. Meron din mga generous friends and mga nagdonate ng ready to distribute packed lunch, and we did not bother to check them kasi kailangan mabilisan ang galaw, so lagay lahat sa trucks. It's not the time to meddle in politics and magsiraan. You are more than welcome to give donations and/or join us in helping the Ondoy victims. Let us spread love not hate :)... thanks

I even apologized to him for publishing the photo:

Hi Atenean/Rosalino,

And just now, I saw these photos on Facebook:
